Canada grants Taiwan visa-waiver privilege

Taiwan passport holders can now visit Canada for up to six months without a visa. The new policy is effective immediately. That’s the word from the Canada Trade Office in Taipei (CTOT) on Monday.

As long as the Taiwanese visitors do not work in Canada, they do not need a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV). It said this will only apply to Taiwan passport holders who have a personal identification number.

The Canada office said that the visa free entry will lower travel costs and increase convenience for visiting Taiwanese. The Canadian visa used to cost Taiwanese about 80 US dollars (NT$2,500). It also said the new policy will boost trade and cultural exchanges between the two sides. Last year, over 61,893 Taiwanese visited Canada.

Meanwhile, a local travel agency said that the visa-free entry should lead to an increase in tourism to Canada. But the agency said that it still wouldn’t compare to the incentives offered by visa-free entry to the UK or European Union.

Taiwan is also hoping to get a visa-waiver from the United States. The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) spokesman Christopher Kavanagh said that one condition is that there is a less than 3% rejection rate for non-immigrant visa applications. Taiwan has just reached that number for the first time this year. Other requirements include sharing information regarding terrorists and criminals.
