Time to help others “Giving Back for Breakfast”

Kelowna students have been working hard to raise funds for this upcoming event called “Giving Back for Breakfast“. This is a fundraiser event for the Food Bank organized by Gayle Voyer at Total Events. (www.totalevents.ca)

The students came up with many great ideas for this event. For example, one student played the violin for the students, one group cooked and brought “donation” lunch for the rest of the students and some students gave a massage for the others during  lunch time. In this picture, the students are making donation boxes.

Only one group will get an opportunity to go to Delta Grand Okanagan Hotel to attend the breakfast on Tuesday, June 30th in the end but the important thing is that all the students from all over the world work as a team and get a great experience helping locals who need a help.

The Director of Studies in Kelowna, Jennifer Peachy says that “If we can suspend all judgment and accept that another human being needs our help, no matter where they live, we too can make a difference.”

Thank you very much for your help, Kelowna students! 🙂

New Director of Studies at VanWest Kelowna

Happy Summer Solstice!

It’s been a busy spring at VanWest College with much time spent preparing for this summer’s teen & youth programs in Kelowna and Vancouver.  Often with spring comes change, and today I’m pleased to announce we have a new Director of Studies at VanWest Kelowna.

Jennifer Peachey has 20+ years teaching experience both as an English teacher and ballet teacher.  She is well-travelled and previously taught English in Vietnam in addition to owning and managing her own dance schools in Canada.  Jennifer has been teaching at VanWest Kelowna since 2006 and is thrilled to now lead this campus as the new Director of Studies.

I had a chance to interview Jen by email and here is what she had to say:

What are you looking forward to the most about your new position? I’m really looking forward to building a great team in Kelowna. I think good teachers are the key to happy students. As we grow I want to keep the enthusiasm and love of teaching alive and thriving. Every teacher has something special and unique to offer the students and I want to capitalize on that.

What is your favourite thing to do in Kelowna? Kelowna has a lot to offer in every season  but I have to say I like the summer! I love to go for walks in the early morning or late evening when the days are hot and sunny. I also love to sit under a shady tree and read.

How do you see the school growing and changing in the next 5 years? My vision for this campus would be continuing to see our student numbers grow while keeping our classes relatively small. Right now we have a real ‘family’ feel to our campus because the foreign community is not that big in Kelowna.  We are also looking forward to getting the internship program up and running in the near future.

What is one thing you would like students and agents to know most about VanWest Kelowna? I would like them to know that Kelowna is not a big city and that is what makes studying here unique. When you come to VanWest Kelowna you become part of our family and you get to enjoy our friendly community. We like to do field expeditions as often as possible so that students interact with the community; we feel that this is a vital part of their experience here. From making pottery with a real potter to playing soccer with other locals, students immerse themselves in our beautiful city and in Canadian life.

Jennifer and the team at VanWest Kelowna look forward to meeting you soon!  For inquiries about studying at VanWest Kelowna, please contact us!

About Canada: a Quebecois view!

Hello everyone.Canada presentation

Last week, we had a special conversation club with Sylvie!  Sylvie is from Quebec and one of our brilliant students in VanWest.  She introduced us geographic Canada and told us the adventurous stories that she experienced in Canada.

From presentation, we learned about different provinces, territories, great lakes and mountains in Canada. She even brought maple syrup and we tasted it. What a sweet treat!  Thank you Sylvie:)

From Monday to Thursday at 4:15pm, VanWest offers free conversation clubs, so if you want to join us, please visit room 215!

Jamie:)

Kelowna Summer Festivals

Kelowna is such a beautiful place to stay especially in spring and summer. Since there are many fun festivals and events, the city is full of energy!

I’d like to introduce some of my favorite festivals!

Parks Alive” is my favorite Kelowna summer festival. Concerts and food stands are held in North Glenmore, Rutland, East Kelowna, the Mission and especially the downtown area from June to September . Usually, the downtown area gets busy on Friday and Saturday night. Bring your blanket and chair downtown and enjoy the free concerts with your friends on the weekend! For more details, check out the activity calendar!

Also, “Fat Cat Children’s Festival” is one of the popular festivals in Kelowna. It is  going to be held on June 11th and 12th this year. There are many free events and acitivies. The parade will  start  from 10am to 11:30am on Saturday, June 12th. If you would like to meet new people, be a volunteer! It would be a good experience to work with Canadian, practice your English and enjoy the festivall! Weekend admission is $5 for individuals.

Don’t forget the big event on July 1st! It’s a very important day for Canadians, “Canada Day“! Get together downtown, enjoy music and good food with your friends! At night, the fireworks will light up the sky!

Here is a list of Vancouver and Kelowna festivals and events! Please check this out.
